# Demo Video or Product Explainer? Pick the Job Before You Hit Record

[By \- Paul Molinari,](https://popcorngtm.com/blog/author/paul-molinari) Oct 21, 2026

![ product demo video ](https://popcorngtm.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Screenshot%202026-10-20%20at%209.56.32%20AM.png?width=1480&height=836&name=Screenshot%202026-10-20%20at%209.56.32%20AM.png)

Most restaurant tech videos fail before anyone presses record. Somebody says "we need a video," somebody else screen-records the dashboard, and six minutes later the team has a file that runs too long for LinkedIn and says too little for a CFO.

The fix starts with one question. What job is this video doing?

There are two jobs worth naming. A **demo video** shows how the product works. A **product explainer** shows why it matters. They sit next to each other on a content calendar, but they behave very differently in a sales cycle.

![Screenshot 2026-10-20 at 9.56.32 AM](https://popcorngtm.com/hubfs/Screenshot%202026-10-20%20at%209.56.32%20AM.png) <https://youtu.be/PwhB4mYTV8Y?si=LqMP0JAGVLWOYrQg>

*The OpSage by CONVX product overview, produced by Popcorn GTM. Six minutes, from a GM's morning to the executive dashboard.*

## The demo video: show the work

A demo video is for the buyer who already raised a hand. They know the problem. Now they want to see the screens, follow the clicks, and decide whether the product does what the sales deck promised.

[The OpSage overview above is a demo.](https://opsage.com/restaurant-data-platform) As OpSage's fractional CMO, I wanted it to open on a general manager's morning: an equipment alert flagged before service, a forecast range for the day, and prep guidance down to the steak and chicken. From there it pulls back to the weekly view, where sales trends sit beside weather, local events, and guest review sentiment. It closes at the executive level, with portfolio dashboards and plain-language questions answered through Claude.

That order is on purpose. A GM watching sees their own shift. A CFO watching sees the roll-up. Same six minutes, two buyers served.

Demo videos solve a quieter sales problem too. Hand a prospect a sandbox login and they wander. They click into settings, find an empty report, and decide the product is unfinished. A recorded demo keeps the story on track, and it forwards cleanly to everyone in the buying group who missed the call. One enterprise prospect told the OpSage team they preferred the video to sandbox access for exactly that reason.

A good demo video usually has:

- A runtime of 3 to 8 minutes
- Real product screens with realistic data
- Narration that names the user and the moment ("It's 9 a.m. and the GM opens the app")
- A home in the middle and bottom of the funnel: sales follow-ups, product pages, the YouTube channel

## The product explainer: start with the problem

An explainer is for the operator who hasn't decided to care yet. It opens on the problem in their words, gets to the payoff fast, and shows only enough product to make the promise believable.

Length is the discipline. Forty-five seconds to two minutes, one problem, one outcome. If you feel the urge to squeeze in a second feature, you've found your next video.

Explainers live at the top of the funnel, in LinkedIn feeds, YouTube Shorts, the first email of a sequence, and the hero spot on a landing page. They can be built from screen footage, motion graphics, or an on-camera presenter. What they can't do is wander.

##### Side by side:

| | Demo video | Product explainer |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Question it answers | How does it work? | Why should I care? |
| Who's watching | An evaluating buyer and their buying group | An operator who hasn't engaged yet |
| Runtime | 3 to 8 minutes | 45 seconds to 2 minutes |
| Opens with | The user and their workflow | The problem |
| Where it lives | Sales follow-ups, product pages, YouTube | LinkedIn, email, landing pages |
| Success looks like | Fewer "can you show me that again?" calls | Clicks, replies, and booked demos |

## One recording, a whole library

The six-minute overview is also raw material. We're now cutting it into short vignettes, each built around a single use case such as review sentiment, local events, or the executive dashboard. Every one of those clips becomes an explainer. The full demo stays on the product page for buyers who want the whole tour.

Plan the long video with clean chapter breaks and you've written the short-form calendar for the quarter without recording anything new.

## The toolkit behind it

None of this needs a production crew or a studio day. Here's the stack we use, in the order we use it.

- **Screenshot tools for the storyboard.** Before anything gets recorded, we capture every screen in the order the story needs. That set becomes the storyboard, the shot list, and the input for the script.
- **Claude, from Anthropic, for the script.** We give Claude the screenshots along with the audience and the story arc. It drafts narration that matches what's on screen, and we edit it into the brand's voice. The founder reviews a script instead of losing an afternoon to retakes.
- **Mobile First for phone views.** Restaurant managers live on their phones. This Chrome extension frames the product in a realistic device on the desktop, so mobile workflows look like mobile workflows on screen.
- **Descript for the edit.** [Descript turns the recording into a transcript you edit like a document, and cutting a sentence cuts the footage with it.](https://get.descript.com/tjax8o0ocgrw) Filler words come out in one pass. For short explainers, its AI presenter gives the brand a consistent face without asking a founder to sit under a ring light every week.

The order matters more than the tools. Script first, record second, cut third.

## Why restaurant tech video needs people who know restaurants

A general video shop can make something pretty. It usually can't tell you why a GM cares about an equipment alert before the lunch rush, or why a prep guide belongs in the first thirty seconds. Operators spot that gap instantly, and once they do, they stop watching.

Popcorn GTM makes demo videos and product explainers for restaurant technology companies. We plan the series with your team and script it in your brand voice. Then we cut versions for your product pages and your reps' follow-up emails, plus short clips for social. You can bring us in for a single video project, or roll video into our [Air Cover](https://popcorngtm.com/aircover) content program alongside your blog and email.
