# McDonald's Q3: Fewer Guests, Bigger Checks, and a Bill Coming Due for Everyone Else

[By \- Paul Molinari,](https://popcorngtm.com/blog/author/paul-molinari) Nov 04, 2026

![ McDonalds Q3 ](https://popcorngtm.com/hs-fs/hubfs/McDonalds%20Q3%202026.jpg?width=2240&height=1260&name=McDonalds%20Q3%202026.jpg)

**TL;DR**

- McDonald's U.S. same-store sales slipped 0.2% in Q3, and guest counts fell. Higher checks covered the gap.
- The CEO called the U.S. fix an "intervention on value" after the Q2 push of 10 items under $3 couldn't get traction.
- Loyalty members drove $11B+ in Q3 sales, roughly 29% of systemwide sales. Expect targeted, personalized offers to replace blanket discounts.
- About 90% of the 1,955 net new restaurants opened outside the U.S.
- For everyone else: don't fight McDonald's on price, track traffic next to comps, and put your loyalty data to work before you discount.

Negative 0.2 percent. That's where McDonald's U.S. same-store sales finished the third quarter, and it's the number every QSR operator in America should tape to the office wall this week.

On paper the quarter looks fine. Systemwide sales topped $38 billion, up 4 percent. Global comps rose 1.5 percent. Japan led a 4.2 percent gain in International Developmental Licensed Markets, and Germany and Australia pushed International Operated Markets to 1.4 percent while France dragged. Diluted EPS came in at $3.51, up from $3.18 a year ago. Wall Street will sleep fine tonight.

The line I keep rereading is smaller. In the U.S., guest counts were negative, "largely offset by positive check growth." Fewer people walked in. The ones who did paid more. McDonald's has reported some version of that sentence for several quarters now, and I think it's the most important trend in fast food.

## "Intervention" is the right word

Chris Kempczinski said the U.S. business was "encouraged by improvement as the quarter progressed following our intervention on value."

Intervention. That's the word you use when the family sits someone down in the living room. It's an admission that something went wrong, and the Q2 evidence backs that up. The 10-items-under-$3 push couldn't find traction with guests.

My read on why: a list of cheap items is a promotion, and guests can smell a promotion. After a few years of menu prices climbing faster than paychecks, value lives in the gap between what a guest expects to pay and what shows up on the receipt. A short list of $3 items doesn't close that gap when the combo they came for still costs what it costs. Guests compare today's order to the last one, and McDonald's spent the past few years teaching them to expect a bigger number.

## The check-growth treadmill

Raising the average check while traffic falls is a perfectly good strategy for a quarter or two. After that it becomes a treadmill. Every quarter of price-driven comps spends down a little more guest goodwill, and the people you priced out are building new habits somewhere else. Maybe that's a grocery store hot case. Maybe it's eating at home.

The Golden Arches can stay on that treadmill longer than anyone because of its scale. A 30-unit regional burger brand can't. Two quarters of negative traffic papered over by price is how a franchisee ends up staring at a location that used to make money.

## The number nobody's talking about: $11 billion

If I wrote the release, this stat would lead it. Sales to loyalty members across 70 markets passed $11 billion in the quarter and reached $41 billion on a trailing 12-month basis.

Run the rough math and close to 29 percent of the quarter's systemwide sales came through an identified loyalty member. McDonald's knows who those people are, how often they visit, and when they started coming less often.

![](https://popcorngtm.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Nov-04-2026-06-01-07-2905-PM.png?width=2400&height=1350&name=undefined-Nov-04-2026-06-01-07-2905-PM.png)

That's where the value fight goes next. A menu board discount goes to everyone, including the guest who would have paid full price. A targeted offer in the app goes to the lapsed Tuesday lunch regular and nobody else. One of those protects margin. The other one gives it away. The company has the data to run the second play at enormous scale, and I expect we'll hear a lot more about personalized value on the next few calls.

## Still building while traffic shrinks

McDonald's closed the quarter with 46,554 restaurants in 114 countries, up 1,955 from a year ago. In the U.S. it added 188, from 13,633 to 13,821.

Do the subtraction and roughly 90 percent of the system's new restaurants opened outside the U.S. Domestically, unit growth adds systemwide sales even when the average store gets no busier. That's useful for the headline number. It doesn't help the operator whose drive-thru line got shorter.

![](https://popcorngtm.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Nov-04-2026-06-01-15-2949-PM.png?width=2400&height=1350&name=undefined-Nov-04-2026-06-01-15-2949-PM.png)

Then there's the question of who runs those stores. Of the 13,821 U.S. restaurants, 13,244 are franchised, about 96 percent. Every value deal, every bundle and every app offer gets felt on a franchisee's P&L first.

## What this means for the rest of the industry

If the biggest fast-food chain in the world, with $38 billion a quarter and a loyalty engine that size, can't grow U.S. traffic right now, a regional chain won't discount its way out of the same problem. Here's what I'd take from this quarter.

1. **Don't fight McDonald's on price.** It has the buying power, the marketing budget and the patience. If your value strategy is "cheaper than the Golden Arches," you picked the one fight you are guaranteed to lose.
2. **Put guest counts next to comps in every ops review.** A positive comp built entirely on check growth is a warning light. Call it one.
3. **Your loyalty data is your value strategy.** If you can't see which guests visited less this quarter, the only tool left is a discount for everybody.
4. **Run value as an operations problem as well as a pricing one.** Portion, speed, order accuracy, a hot fry and a friendly voice at the window all shape whether a guest felt the money was well spent. Operators control every one of those on every shift.
5. **Restaurant tech vendors, pitch the traffic problem.** Operators are about to spend a year defending visits without wrecking margin. Targeted offers, menu engineering, labor tools that keep speed up when staffing is thin. If your product helps a GM win back the guest who stopped coming, lead with that.

McDonald's has the cash to keep intervening until the numbers turn. Most chains get one or two good swings at value before the P&L stops cooperating. Spend yours on the guests you already know.
