Brand Archetype Primer

POPCORN GTM HEADSHOT PAUL Circle Here's the quick-scan primer, organized by the four motivational families from my Heroes, Jedis, and Dudes Brand Archetype Field Guide. This simple primer is built for a fast read, not a deep one.
Have fun! - Paul

How this primer works:

Read down the "you're this if" family description first. Wherever you land without hesitating, that's your starting point. Two rules before you make your pick: Select one primary archetype only, and if three feel equally right, that's not a strength, it signals you're working with a brand that hasn't committed yet.

The Freedom Family — for brands built on breaking limits

Archetype Core Drive Voice Mantra Brands You're this if...
Rebel Disruption Bold, blunt, no hedging "Rules were made to be broken." Harley-Davidson, Liquid Death, Dave's Hot Chicken You built this because the industry made you angry.
Explorer Discovery Curious, independent, asks "what if" "Go your own way." Patagonia, Jeep, Airbnb, Starbucks You care more about the frontier than the finish line.
Magician Transformation Visionary, evocative, a little mysterious "Turn insight into alchemy." Apple, Tesla, Disney You make things happen that people didn't think were possible.

The Social Family — for brands built on connection

Archetype Core Drive Voice Mantra Brands You're this if...
Hero Mastery Direct, motivating, action-verb heavy "Challenge accepted." Nike, Peloton, Under Armour Your product exists to make people capable of more.
Lover Desire Warm, sensory, unhurried "Feel something." Chanel, Häagen-Dazs, Bose Beauty and feeling are the point, not the garnish.
Jester Delight Playful, quick, unafraid of weird "Serious brands are seriously boring." Old Spice, Dollar Shave Club, Duolingo You'd rather be laughed with than nodded at respectfully.

The Order Family — for brands built on trust and excellence

Archetype Core Drive Voice Mantra Brands You're this if...
Caregiver Protection Reassuring, patient, service-first "We've got you." Johnson & Johnson, Dove, TOMS You'd rather serve the customer than sell them.
Creator Craft Expressive, generous with ideas "Make your mark." Adobe, LEGO, Figma, Anthropic You're building the tools for someone else's imagination.
Ruler Authority Precise, unhurried, doesn't need to convince "Take control." Mercedes-Benz, Rolex, Accenture Your audience wants the best and expects to pay for it.

The Belonging Family — for brands built on being real

Archetype Core Drive Voice Mantra Brands You're this if...
Everyperson Recognition Plain, warm, no pretense "Just like you." IKEA, Costco, Lyft You'd rather be trusted than admired.
Sage Clarity Measured, precise, earns the room's attention "Truth over trend." Google, TED, Mayo Clinic People come to you to be told what's actually true.
Innocent Goodness Clear, optimistic, unpretentious "Keep it simple. Keep it good." Aldi, Warby Parker, Aveeno Your whole pitch is: the thing is good, and that's enough.
